Where It All Began
The Order of Malta Ministries Los Angeles launched the first van in 2019. Today, the van is utilized at least three days a week to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables from partner Food Forward to Los Angeles’ neediest communities. Since the spring of 2020, the van has delivered more than 2 million pounds of food. The van is also used to transport materials for its flu vaccine program, and delivers winter jackets, backpacks, Christmas toys, Easter baskets, and hygiene kits to local families and to the homeless. At the World Day of the Sick, the van distributes bottles of water from the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. The van also participates in Los Angeles Archdiocese events including the OneLifeLA walk where Order of Malta members and volunteers offer first aid and sunscreen to participants.
